Filipino Beef Picadillo

This quick and easy dish is one of my favorites to eat, Filipino Beef Picadillo; a delicious and savory beef dish, made with ground beef, garlic, onions, tomatoes tomato paste, garbanzo beans, peas, carrots, raisins, bay leaves, Tamari (low sodium soy sauce), pepper and black olives.

Filipino Beef Picadillo

Picadillo (“mince”) is a traditional dish in many Latin American countries and the Philippines (where it is known as giniling, and also arroz a la Cubana) that is similar to afritada.

This is such a versatile recipe. And, yes, I do love my crockpot, so easy to use and saves me loads of time with this recipe. I like the fact that all you to do is cook the ground beef in olive oil and garlic and then throw the rest of the ingredients in the crockpot. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

Origins

In the Philippines, picadillo is a soupy dish traditionally made with ground beef and either potatoes or chayote. There are also drier versions of the dish. It is also called giniling, Tagalog for ground meat. What Cubans call picadillo is known as Arroz a la Cubana to Filipinos. The Philippine version is similar to normal Latino picadillo usually made with raisins, tomato sauce and diced potatoes added, but without green olives and capers, and is often served with white rice, fried plantains (maduros in Spanish, saging na saba in Filipino) on the side, and a fried egg on top. Boiled eggs are also eaten with the dish

How to make Filipino Beef Picadillo

First, you will heat up olive oil in a medium-size frying pan on medium-high.

Next, add onion and saute until translucent.

Add minced garlic, saute until fragrant and golden brown.

Then, add the ground beef and continue to cook until brown. Drain.

When ground beef is done, add to the crockpot and the rest of the ingredients and set it on to slow cook or quick cook making sure to subtract a couple of hours.

If using the pot method, once the ground beef is browned, add the rest of the ingredients. Turn down the heat to medium-low to simmer for 25 minutes.

Serve with rice. Enjoy!

NOTE:

In any recipe, I try to cut down on the salt for health reasons. So, for instance, if there is salt in the butter, I omit the salt in the recipe.

On a Keto Diet: Use Cauliflower Rice as an alternative to rice. So good.

Other ingredients you can add: red pepper or black or green olives.
