How do you pair food and wine properly?

Holiday Food and Wine Pairings

When pondering Wine and Food Pairings, the foremost question that arises in my mind is always: How? How does one effectively pair food and wine? There’s a certain enchantment to matching the perfect food with the perfect wine that consistently baffles me, and conversely, the consequences of pairing a great bottle of wine with the wrong dish can spoil the entire experience. This is particularly true when lacking the proper tools, such as a functioning corkspinner (electric cork opener), to open that exquisite bottle of wine.

I have made some of my favorite dishes for family and friends multiple times. Above is a photo of an example of, I had made this Cheeseball shaped tree and paired it with a Sangria I made myself with one of the white wine; from my shipment of fine wine I receive every month from the Wine of the Month Club at exclusive member pricing.

Don’t be afraid to experiment

As I experimented and found the right pairings I would be asked what I did to my dish to make it so much better. They would laugh and think I was not sharing my recipe change when I would tell them “it was the exact same recipe”. I just paired it with the right wine and it made the meal much more incredible. It made the meal and event.

There Are Two Basic Rules When Pairing Food and Wine

  1. You can buy a wine that compliments the food.
  2. Or a wine that enhances the flavor of the food.

Those are real choices that can either Compliment or Enhance the meal or food choices. Do you want to just compliment the food with the right tastes? Or do you want to enhance or enhance a specific ingredient or flavor? Showcase or balance.

Let’s Explore What Wines Go With What Foods?

When it comes to complementing food, the general rule is as follows: Red wines are most suited for bold-flavored meats or red meats, while white wines complement light-intensity meats such as fish or chicken. Bitter wines, such as red wines, are effectively balanced by fat. It’s often preferable to match the wine with the sauce rather than with the meat.

In terms of enhancing the food, alcohol plays a pivotal role in releasing flavor molecules within foods and aiding in the dissolution of fats. This process allows ingredients to showcase their distinct flavors in ways that other liquids like water or broth, or fats like butter and olive oil, cannot achieve.
