WHAT IS EGGNOG?!

It’s historically known as milk punch (admittedly, not the best name). And, Eggnog is a mixture of beaten egg yolks, cream, and often, whiskey or rum to make it boozy.

As a matter of fact, Eggnog literally means eggs inside a small cup. It is used as a toast to one’s health. Nog is an old English dialect word (from East Anglia) of obscure origins that was used to describe a kind of strong beer (hence noggin).

EGGNOG HISTORY:

Not to mention, nobody seems to know the exact origins of eggnog, but it is first recorded in the seventeenth century. What’s more, Eggnog, however, is first mentioned in the early nineteenth century. But, it seems to have been popular on both sides of the Atlantic at that time. However, an alternative British name was egg flip.

It all began in England, where eggnog was the trademark drink of the upper class.

“You have to remember, the average Londoner rarely saw a glass of milk,” says author/historian James Humes (July 1997, “To Humes It May Concern”), former speechwriter and adviser to four presidents.”

According to food historian, Babson College professor, and author of Hog and Hominy: Soul Food from Africa to America, Frederick Opie, “Colonists referred to rum as grog; bartenders served rum in small wooden carved mugs called noggins. Thus the drink eventually became egg-n-grog and over time eggnog.”

“In the winter, the wealthy would drink warm milk and egg beverages seasoned with pricey spices: such as ground nutmeg and cinnamon and expensive liquors like brandy and sherry to keep it from spoiling.”

Nevertheless, an English creation, it descended from a hot British drink called posset, which consists of eggs, milk, and ale or wine.

In addition, the first recorded eggnog recipe dates back to 1775, and it called for rum.

The Germans make eggnog or rather egg soup with beer (Biersuppe).

WHAT IS EGGNOG MADE OF?

The recipe for eggnog; eggs beaten with sugar, milk or cream, and some kind of spirit.

Once you temper the egg yolk-milk mixture, you return it to the stove and cook over medium heat until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. If you have a candy thermometer it should reach 160º.
